AMD Awareness Week launch

By Sharon Siddique
MDS president

Wow! This was my first trip to KTPH, and what a great hospital! Breezy, green, practical. And the facilities are wonderful. The opening was held in the new Auditorium, and was well attended.

Th
e photo exhibition of “seeing through the eyes of AMD”, by Adam Hahn, was really interesting. He took portrait photographs of AMD patients as they “see” themselves. Certainly a unique picture into our point of view.

The talks in the afternoon were also quite informative. First, at 12pm was a very popular talk on eating well for AMD, and cooking demonstration. A big tip here is to check out the KTPH nutrition department. They run free lectures and cooking classes every day at FoodWorks located at B1 next to the waterfall. Check out their website at ahnutrition.wordpress.com. The website has masses of really interesting recipes online. You can also call 66022420 to sign up for classes. (Below is a pic of Sharon with guest of honour Lam Pin Min, eye doctor and Member of Parliament for Ang Mo Kio GRC)

The second talk (1pm) was on preventing falls. The speaker was a geriatric specialist, and it is indeed interesting to note how our MD pulls in additional specialties to cater to potential complications of our condition. The third talk (2pm) was by a resident pharmacist, and concerned vitamins and supplements. Her most interesting message was always tap into the advice of the pharmacist on duty when you are considering what to buy, and whether or not any other conditions you may have, and/or medications you are taking, can affect your choice of supplements.

Certainly an afternoon well spent. MDS was quite well represented by members.
